The crew of Fosse/Verdon attended the TCA Panel for the show, Michelle and Sam Rockwell are also producers on the series, they were accompagned by director Thomas Kail, writer Steven Levenson, Producer Joel Fields and Nicole Fosse, the daughter of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, the show will air on April 8 on FX, don’t miss it !
“There was nothing she couldn’t do, and made it look incredibly effortless,” explains Michelle Williams, who stars as Verdon opposite current Oscar nominee Sam Rockwell as Fosse.
A dance teacher as well, Verdon at one time taught her fellow A-list
stars, including Marilyn Monroe who, Williams says, once quipped, “If
Gwen Verdon can’t teach you to dance, you’re rhythm bankrupt with two
Rockwell says that although he and Williams didn’t have formal dance training, they’ve both had enough recent experience that “Michelle and I can hoof. We’re movers.” Movers, he notes, who are vastly aided by the series’ choreographers, Andy Blankenbuehler and Susan Misner.
As Williams adds, what she already knew about dance was helpful, but when recreating Fosse and Verdon down to the minute detail, “this is the next level of difficulty.”
“She was like the sunshine in the room the way I’ve come to think of her is someone who’s always trying her hardest… What Nicole and others have shared with me is she was always trying to rise up and be her best self.”
Verdon, beyond her contributions to Fosse’s work, was one of the
greatest dancers of her generation, and the series required both
Rockwell and Williams to make a big leap forward in their dance
“Michelle and I can hoof, you know, we’re movers — but this is a whole other realm,” Rockwell said. “They look like normal people, but then they get up and dance and they’re superheroes.”
Over the last 10 years, Williams said, “[dancing] just keeps coming up for me,” but getting those opportunities has been a source of joy. In 2014, Williams portrayed Sally Bowles in “Cabaret” on Broadway to rave reviews. When she saw actor Kelli Barrett recreate musical numbers from the film for “Fosse/Verdon,” she was “so jealous — I wanted to be on that stage!”
