This morning, the nominations for the 89th Academy Awards have been announced and Manchester By The Sea received 6 nominations including, Best Film, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
Congrats to Michelle and the cast, a deserved nomination for Michelle who did so much in such a small role, michelle reacted to her nomination :
When your mom calls early in the morning, “screamingly unintelligible,” the news is either amazing or devastating. Michelle Williams quickly realized it was the former.
“I was at work,” Ms. Williams said, when she learned of her Oscar nomination for best supporting actress for her performance in “Manchester by the Sea.” She plays a woman who shares a tragic past with her ex-husband (Casey Affleck). Mr. Affleck was also nominated on Tuesday, for best actor, and the film wound up in with a total of six nods, including best picture, best director and best original screenplay (Kenneth Lonergan), and best supporting actor (Lucas Hedges).
This is Ms. Williams’s fourth nomination over all (no wins yet), and she’s philosophical about the process. “It’s a really special and amazing thing when it happens,” she said. “It happens some years; it doesn’t happen other years. It’s good not to get too attached and wrap up too much identity in it.”
In a New York Times review, A. O. Scott called the film “a study in individual misery” which chronicles the fallout of an unspeakable loss for one man, his family and the pain that lingers as broken lives are mended — or not.
“For such a small movie, this is the last thing in the world that you think is going to come of it,” Ms. Williams said. “So that deserves a celebration for everyone who worked on a movie with no fame or glory, at the end to be here for Lucas, for Kenny, for Casey — that’s a really beautiful thing.”
Ms. Williams was calling from Brooklyn, where she’s working on the new musical “The Greatest Showman,” and said she would momentarily pause to celebrate.
“I think it’s nice to celebrate when good things happen because life can be rocky,” she said, adding, “But the best way to really celebrate it is to be in the middle of the rest of your life. I’m just happy to be where I am.”
“Thank you so much to the Academy for this recognition. Making this film was incredibly rewarding and none of it would have been possible without the guidance from our fearless leader, Kenneth Lonergan. I am thrilled to share this nomination with Kenny, Casey, Lucas and the rest of the cast, producers and crew. Congratulations to my fellow nominees. It is truly an honor to be included among such amazing women in this category.”
“I don’t know if you ever get used to getting nominated. It’s a kind of nail-biter mostly because I don’t want to let anyone down. It’s hard to have those few scenes because you have very little time to communicate a full person. Neither Casey [Affleck] or Kenny [Lonergan] grow up on their egos. They don’t announce themselves when they walk on or off set. In a way it was a very comfortable working environment, and only helped with making my performance that much better.”
Casey Affleck praises Michelle in his speech :
“I was just so glad it came together the way it did. I knew it was more than the typical drama because of the script. There are so many days without resources and trying to squeeze everything you got into that scene. I’m not the first to say it — when you put Michelle Williams in any scene, it’s elevated and I think all the credit goes to her.”
And Busy Phillips reacted to michelle’s nomination, so sweet :
Congratulations to my heart Michelle Williams on her 4th Acadamy Award nomination!!!!!
